Just Wondering…

“If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the LORD’s holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, then you will find your joy in the LORD, and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob. The mouth of the LORD has spoken.” (Isaiah 58:13-14 NIV)

In our faulty theological thinking Christians often believe that Sunday is all about them, when in fact it is to be all about God. While I do not want to get into the nauseating arguments concerning which day we consider as the Sabbath, I want to address what Christians often think of God’s day of worship. Do you consider it one of your days off? Do you see it as part of your fun time for the weekend? Or do you honor it as a day to reflect on God, you know, the Lord’s Day? Why is it whenever this topic is brought up far too many believers immediately get testy and begin making excuses. “God doesn’t care which day I worship on.” “I go to church.” “I love God.” “I am not about a works oriented religion.” Yet, these excuses do not address the truth God is addressing with the Israelites that applies to all of His children today. As His children we are to keep one day sacred for Him alone. Christians have rightly chosen Sunday as that day to honor Jesus’ resurrection and to follow in the footsteps of the early church. However, many of no longer care if we break our Sabbath day of worship. We do as we please with no thought to God or His Son at all. We often fill it with our own personal schedule, thinking we have the right to do so because after all it is one of our days off. But by dishonoring the congregational worship of God by not truly delighting in it and keeping it holy, what have we chosen to do? Perhaps this is one of many reasons why the Christian church is so weak in the world today? God’s children no longer see His day as something they should prioritize and honor Him on. Notice what God says, ” if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, then you will find your joy in the LORD”! So much of the believer’s life is filled with idle things that have no relevance to their eternal existence. We would rather go our own way. Yet, we are commanded to be a “member” of the “body of Christ.” We are to join a local church, serve, and honor God by uniting with them on our Sabbath day of worship. Now, are you already thinking of how you can make excuses for how you can do what you please on the Lord’s Day or are you willing to honor Him by being united with His body worshipping Him? Makes one wonder…
