Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel… . (2 Timothy 2:8)

What is your good news? A birth? Wedding? Surprises? Unexpected money? While all of these are good news in of themselves, they are not the good news. The good news of the gospel. What good news is that? Well, the good news that Jesus the Messiah has come to earth, walked among us, lived with us, suffered and died on a cruel cross, became the sacrifice for our sins, was raised from the dead and now lives in heaven making intercession for us before the throne of God! Now that’s not just good news, it is great news!

Paul wrote Timothy to “remember Jesus Christ” which was his “gospel,” his good news that he had to preach. Paul understood just what great news this was because he had experienced it for himself. As a Jew he had studied about the Messiah, the long awaited anointed one who would one day come and restore Israel and establish God’s kingdom forever. But Paul never expected him coming the way he had actually done! In fact, Paul was completely taken off guard by how it did occur. Jesus did not come as a military commander, like David, even though He was descended from David. Jesus did not come as a high priest wearing robes, but He did come as one with authority and could debate even the Jewish scholars and priests of the day, making them wonder  “Who is this man?” Jesus did not come to change the law of Moses but to finalize and complete it in who he was and what he did as our ultimate sacrifice. No longer did anyone have to follow a set of regulations, make sacrifices, and try as hard as they could to be good enough. God had provided a way through Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. Jesus became our sacrifice through our faith and trust in who he is and what he did. The gospel. The good news.

Good news is great isn’t it? But this is the greatest news of all time. This was Paul’s gospel, his good news, and it should be ours as well? What is your good news? Do you know about the greatest news there is? Do you know Jesus? Dear child of the Lord, need I remind you that because of Jesus you live forever if you have received him by faith? Good news indeed!
