For your Maker is your husband— the LORD Almighty is his name— the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth. (Isaiah 54:5)
What Name do you know the Lord by? As we are affected by the presence and power of God we come to know Him by differing names. Names like “Provider,” “Master,” “Keeper,” “Fortress,” and so many others. In the discipleship class I am teaching right now we learned to recognize the Lord and to use the names we have come to know Him by. Here in this verse we see that Isaiah is telling the women of Israel that they will come to know God by the names of “husband,” “Lord Almighty,” “the Holy One of Israel,” “Redeemer,” and “God of all the earth!” WOW! What a bunch of names to come to know God by!
Imagine being able to call God your “husband?” Isn’t that curious? Yet, we find God telling His prophets that He is a “husband” to Israel: “’Return, faithless people,’ declares the LORD, “for I am your husband. I will choose you—one from a town and two from a clan—and bring you to Zion.’” (Jeremiah 3:14) He was a husband to them in that he lead them and took care of them just as a husband is to sacrifice for his bride.
“the Lord Almighty,” declares who He truly is, doesn’t it? There is none like Him. He is all powerful and He is the “Maker” of all things! The Creator who gives all that we need.
“The Holy One of Israel,” kind of goes with “The Lord Almighty,” but I separated them because they can be as well. God is the “Holy One.” There is nothing impure about Him. His character is completely and consistent with who He is – The Holy One. But He is not just holy, He is The Holy One of Israel. Out of all the other nations He chose Israel to be His alone. His people whereby the Savior would come.
“Your Redeemer,” is the of course the one I like the best for obvious reasons! God as a Redeemer was kind of a foreign concept to the Hebrews except that they saw a Messiah to come as a Savior King for their nation. We know God as Redeemer through Jesus.
Finally, the “God of all the earth,” tells us about His authority, rule, and reign. There is no other god’s but God alone. All others are but myth and manmade fiction, but the Lord, he is God of all the earth!
Today, dear one of the Lord, spend some time getting to know God by a name. He knows you by one that only He has given you. It is true! Now come to know Him by a name that really means something only to you and Him.
