He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. (Psalms 91:4)
In the gravel section of our church’s parking lot, every year small birds called Killdeer build their nests. The females work at the gravel until they have made a small but cozy little bowl of a nest, which they fill with a few feathers and such. Not much really. However, as sparse as the nest is they are fearless protectors of their eggs. The mother or the father, whoever has guard duty at the time, will protect their nest with ingenuity and fakery. When a threat comes, they pretend to have a broken wing, pitifully crying, and fluttering away from the eggs so you will follow this helpless little bird. Yet, if you get too close they will immediately fly off for a short distance. If you try to go near their eggs again, they will go through the motion all over.
Not only are they good at fakery but the eggs they lay look exactly like the rocks they nest in, right down to the color, modeled look and texture! When the chicks are hatched, they look just like little fuzzy rocks themselves! And when danger threatens they immediately hunch down and stay very still or if mom or pop are around, they run under the cover of their parent’s wings.
How wonderful to know this morning that the Lord Himself, when we seek refuge from the storms and dangers of life, will shelter us “with His feathers, and under His wings.” Of course I do not think God actually has feathers or wings! But I do believe like the Psalmist that “His faithfulness will be [my] shield and rampart!”
I do not know about you but with the world the way it so often is, I take great comfort in knowing that I can come to the Lord to find shelter, comfort, and encouragement. That when I am tempted, tried, and spiritually assaulted His faithfulness will shelter me just like a loving parent. A little killdeer has graphically taught me so much of the care of the Father as described by the Psalmist. Do you take comfort in His sheltering feathers, under His wings, when you need to find shelter from the spiritual dangers of life? I do.
