You give me your shield of victory, and your right hand sustains me; you stoop down to make me great. (Psalms 18:35)
Here David described how God prepared him for battle, giving him strength, agility, and efficiency. The predominant thought throughout these verses is that David attributed every ability and victory of his to the Lord. Everything he had done and everything he now enjoyed was due to the Lord’s enabling. It is interesting to note that while many Christians profess this to be true, few actually believe it. I believe this to be true because if we truly gave credence to the fact that God is our ultimate enabler, we would live like it. Yet we find churches that depend more on a great promotional campaign or the latest in high tech trickery than in allowing God to actually do something in their midst. After the fact we may vainly say that God “blessed our efforts.” Notice it was “our efforts,” and not God’s.
There are many great things done in the name of the Lord, that have no basis in His name whatsoever. Here’s what I mean: Was God brought into the process at all, or was it just another scheme implemented in order to get bodies through the door? I have a very hard time in seeing Jesus using trickery to get crowds to listen to His message. His message spoke for itself.
We fail the Lord when we think we have to rely on the latest and cutest gimmick in order that the sinful elites out there in the ungodly world will want to give our “archaic” message a listen. After all, today’s sophisticated and world savvy audience expects more for their money, right? What little they give, but that’s another issue! When we think this way, we leave God entirely out of the picture. I honestly think that the gospel message is just as powerful in its historical simplicity that it does not need the window dressing of the 21st Century to make it palatable.
Isn’t God the One who supposedly gives us the victory? Isn’t it His right hand that should sustain us? Is it not His presence that stoops down to make us great and draws us to Himself? If we make a method whereby we sell Jesus as a commodity that the whole world will want to buy, what have we done to the gospel message? While the whole world was whom Jesus died for, the whole world will never respond to the message because it is not drawn to it and it becomes spiritually obscene and degenerate when we try to get the world into the church so we can soft sell the message so they will be tricked into buying into it. And we dare to wonder why so few become members of a church, tithe, serve, witness, or become active disciples of Jesus.
David knew what many of today’s “Christians” have lost sight of, that it is God alone who gives us the victory and the battle belongs to the Lord not the latest trickery the ungodly world can produce. What can you honestly say God has done in your life or your church that could only be only described as His doing without any assistance or promotion from others? If it is something we can do on our own, God is not in it because He will not receive the glory for doing it. He is our shield of victory, it is to be His right hand that sustains us, and He is the One who stoops down and touches lives!
