You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ (John 3:7)
Nicodemus is often vilified for his questioning Jesus’ statement by asking Him, “How can this be?” Yet this is a very logical response. How in the world can a person be “born again?” Spurgeon makes a great insight to this very notion when he relates, “To wash and dress a corpse is a far different thing from making it alive: man can do the one, God alone can do the other.” I fear far too many people are washed and dressed corpses! They say they are “born again,” but they really have no idea what that means. I lay their spiritual ignorance at the front door of the many churches they attend.
A few years ago there was an animated movie called “The Corpse Bride.” This is what the Christian church in America has become — thinking it is the bride of Christ when in fact it is a dead body dressed in its funeral finery. And sadly we are infecting and importing our death shrouds to other people of the world! We have infected them with the notion they are “born again” when in fact they are just corpse brides! Spiritually dead without life and without Christ. We have forgotten for convenience sake that those who are truly “born again” are spiritually renewed. They are changed. You will see the change: Jesus related, “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.” (John 3:19-20)
We live in a church age where no one cares what they do. Worship is focused on self, ministry is seen as a means to vacation, service is rejected, and church membership is ignored. Christians smoke, drink, have premarital sex, excuse foul language and are self-indulgent. They are just like the world, seeking their own comfort! Church discipline is rejected as being way too harsh and you dare not say anyone is not “born again” because you can never judge anyone about anything! Remember one thing however, “Light has come into the world, but men loved the darkness instead of the light because their deeds were evil.” (John 3:19) If you have to make excuses as to why you are not living your faith in the light of Christ, you are not born again. Remember what John said: “If we claim we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar and His word has no place in our lives.” (1 John 1:10)
So let me ask you a simple question: Are you born again? In order to have eternal life, you must be born again. And if you are, there will be a change.
