“If you make the Most High your dwelling– even the LORD, who is my refuge…” (Psalms 91:9)
Can you imagine waking up each day, probably before the sunrise, getting your food ready, packing up all your possession, and making sure all of your children, animals, tents, dishes, utensils, blankets, clothes, food, and necessities of life and survival are packed and ready to go? Go where? Only Moses knew. You followed him as he followed the Lord’s direction. You had to trust in someone who trusted in the invisible God to make sure you were safe, fed, and secure from all the dangers of the world that lurked just outside your tent door. Before the dew vanished from the few blades of grass and the hot sun began to beat mercilessly down on your head, you had to be ready. Not much protection between you and the evil environment of the world! Would Moses lead you and your family safely today?
Herein is a beautiful truth we sometimes over look: This is a song of Moses, one of the few that we have preserved here for us to be encouraged by. What does Moses tell his camp? What words from the Lord will help this day as they get ready for a new march? What words will motivate you to follow Him in trust?
Moses reminds you, “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.” (Psalms 91:1-6)
You had been chased by the Egyptian army, cringed in fear as the angel of death stalked through your midst, and ran through the towering walls of water of the Red Sea as they piled high on either side of your family as they ran for their lives! Now, you are fighting for your lives in the wilderness that seems without end. Some have been overcome with disease and had to trust looking at a bronze snake mounted on a pole and remember it was this same Living God who had healed them that now protected them and you! For some unknown reason, He loves you! If you dwell in Him, “then no harm would befall you, no disaster would come near your tent.”
No nation, army, or individual on earth had such a promise given to them as this! Even God’s own angels “will guard you in all your ways.” Why? Why would God do this marvelous thing? “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.” (Psalms 91:14)
Surely it has to be more difficult than just trusting the Lord? Perhaps if you are “good enough,” or do just the right thing in the right way, then God will be pleased? No, the promise is secure because of His mercy for you. In fact, Moses says that God promises that “He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.” (Psalms 91:15-16)
Today, as you strike your tent and pack up your things remember that the Living God loves you and has mercy on you because of His name and the salvation He provides. Go not in fear today, but be encouraged to walk in Him. Nothing in the whole world matters as long as you walk with God today.
