But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. Salvation comes from the Lord.” (Jonah 2:9)
When the “engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head,” Jonah turned to the only One who could rescue him, the Lord God. “But You,” Jonah cries out, “brought my life up from the pit, O Lord my God!” When all else was fading in his life, he remembered who he could trust and his prayers rose a new to the God of heaven and earth.
When life’s difficulties get too much for us we are ready, willing, and able to go directly to God for help. Why? Because we know that He is truly the only One who can indeed help us during those times when life is totally unexplainable. We cannot predict or say with any certainty which way our lives will turn from day to day, yet we can rely on Him who is able to set the stars in place and maps out all the pathways of the oceans. He knew us before we were born. We can trust Him with our lives. We can trust Him to lead us during the dark waters and through the valley of the shadow of death. He is the One who restores our soul.
Look out on today’s sunlight or the rain shadows or the storm clouds that may gather and rest assured that like the one little sparrow, He knows where you fly to hide, where you sing, and where you need to find rest. As surely as each day brings a new moment in life, your life in Him brings you closer to knowing that only in Him is there found salvation. Salvation that lasts because He will never leave you nor forsake you. Salvation that is sure because no one can snatch you out of His loving hands. Salvation that is secured in the shed blood of His Son who died and rose for you. Who entered into the most holy place to make you holy and lovable in His sight.
From inside of your great “fish” of life you can know that “salvation comes from the Lord.” Sing a new song of thanksgiving!
